Carbohydrates as Diabetes Drugs

Team of UK based dietitians are heading for a research to find out whether carbohydrates found in vegetables, such as garlic, asparagus and chicory can be used for new diabetes drug. Fibers available in certain vegetables are believed effective for weight loss and treatment of diabetes.

Purpose of the study is to find alternative medicine that contains naturally occurring fibers. It is also intended to determine the effects of supplemental dose of fermentable carbohydrates on type 2 diabetes.

Carbohydrate fiber not only prevents diabetes but also controls weight. Experts will study effects on three major type 2 diabetes controlling mechanism.

Over weight condition has significant impact on many chronic diseases. Recent research denotes that controlled weight can prevent diabetes, heart diseases and blood pressure from developing or advancing to higher stage. Such mechanism is because fermentable carbohydrate releases hormones that regulate appetite and increase insulin sensitivity.

Understanding the regulation of appetite and glucose level would help find new way of preventing type 2 diabetes. This is particularly crucial for those who are at high risk of developing diabetes in near future. The study will lead to effective and safe (with least side effects) diabetes drug if research gives positive result.

Out of total diabetic patients almost 90% patients suffer from type 2 diabetes. Being predecessor of many deadly health conditions such as stroke, heart problems and failure of kidney, diabetes needs to be treated as early as possible. Fermentable carbohydrates are expected to be significant element to control weight and delay development of type 2 diabetes.

Given one of the widest spread disease, more researches are required for the prevention of diabetes. Currently available diabetes drug, like Actos and Avandia, are the only option for diabetes patients.
